FIELD STICKS (REQUIRED)

The stick is one of the most personalized pieces of equipment for the player. For beginners, the easiest place to start is with an intermediate or junior complete stick based on age. As a player develops their game, they will often mix and match heads and handles to fit their game and style of play. All heads and handles from True Temper Lacrosse are interchangeable and can be assembled using a simple screw attachment in the back of the head and handle.

HEAD TYPES

  • Offensive Heads (Attack / Offensive Midfielders): These players often look for tighter face shape to help keep the ball in the stick when dodging and to channel the ball down the center of the pocket on passes and shots for more consistency & accuracy.
  • All-Around Heads (Midfielders, Attack, Defense): These players often look for heads that are easy to scoop with and have deeper pocket technologies in the sidewall design to help transition the ball up the field. These heads are great for midfielders or any player that wants a head to work on both offensive and defensive sides of the game during transition play.
  • Defensive Heads (Defense, Defensive midfielders): These players often use heads with slightly wider face shapes to pick off passes and generally prefer heads with stiffer flex profiles to deliver stronger checks. These heads were built for defenseman and defensive midfielder players that are more defensive minded in their game / style of play.
  • Youth Heads (All Positions):  Players that are just starting out benefit from a head with a flatter scoop that makes scooping ground ball pickups easier. The face shape is generally slightly wider to help with catching. Youth heads work for any position on the field – attack, midfield and defense.

HEAD STIFFNESS PROFILES

Head stiffness profiles vary depending on what you are looking for in your stick and how it fits your game. Choose a flex profile from the chart below that fits your style.

  • ProSTIFF Heads = STIFFER
    • ProSTIFF heads maintain their shape better during play, providing the most consistent release point and increased accuracy when passing and shooting. When throwing checks, stiffer heads will transfer more energy leading to more powerful checks.
  • SmartFLX Heads = MEDIUM
    • SmartFLX heads combine the consistency of stiffer heads with the flexibility and pocket feel of more flexible heads. They deliver more balanced performance making it the best of both worlds.
  • PowerFLX Heads: = MORE FLEXIBLE
    • These provide the best pocket feel when cradling and dodging. The more flexible head tends to flow and move naturally with the ball and pocket movement giving you the best feel of the ball in the stick. These heads also have scoops that tend to flex on ground ball pickups – which is great for younger players just learning how to scoop the ball into the pocket.

POCKETS

For all field players – a stick’s pocket depth is considered “legal” when the stick is held horizontal (parallel to the ground) and the ball is visible above the bottom rail of the head when resting in the pocket. If the ball is not visible above the bottom rail, the strings must be adjusted / tightened to create a legal pocket.

HANDLE (SHAFT) TYPES

  • Offensive players (attackman & midfielders): These players use a 30” handle length with their lacrosse head. This is often called “short sticks” or “attack sticks.”
  • Defensive players (defenseman & LSM long stick midfielders): These players use a 60” handle length with their lacrosse head. This is often called “long poles” or “defense sticks.”
  • Youth players (players 10U and younger): Offensive youth players (attack, midfielder) 10U and younger are permitted under US Lacrosse Rules to use a shorter handle length than the standard adult shorts sticks. Our junior stick features a special 28” handle length for youth players looking for a better fitting and more proportional stick to their overall size.
  • BOX players (box indoor players, field defensive midfielders): These players tend to gravitate to a more durable handle construction built to withstand the heavier checks seen in the indoor game. Indoor / Box players will only use a 30” or 32” length handle.

HANDLE STIFFNESS PROFILES

Similar to the head category, Handle flex profiles vary depending on what you are looking for in your stick and how it fits your game. Choose a flex profile from the chart below that fits your style.

  • ProSTIFF Handles = STIFFER
    • ProSTIFF handles offer the least amount of flex. They directly transfer energy to the ball during shots and have less “head lag” when shooting for a more consistent release and improved accuracy out of the pocket.
  • SmartFLX Handles = MEDIUM
    • SmartFLX handles are the best all-around handle because they have a medium stiffness profile – giving players a consistent release point but also incorporating a little more flex in the handle to absorb impacts and increase overall durability on checks.
  • PowerFLX Handles: = MORE FLEXIBLE
    • PowerFLX handles offer more flex to absorb the most amount of energy on stick checks improving overall durability. They also transfer the feel of the ball in the pocket more directly to the hands giving you better pocket feel and better control in the stick when cradling. More flexible handles can give you more whip and more power on your shot.
  • Multi-FLEX Handles: multiple flex profiles in a single handle
    • Multi-FLEX handles are our most innovative flex profiles that are constructed using state-of-art composite layups to engineer specific flex zones into the handle. The coordination of different flex profiles comes from on-field playtesting with our professional players, college players, and high school players. These sticks provide something special in terms of performance that normal alloys (metal) handles cannot imitate.

GLOVES (REQUIRED)

Gloves are one of the most important pieces of protection that a player will choose as they have a huge impact on a player’s ability move naturally during scooping, cradling, throwing and catching. The right lacrosse glove will deliver maximum mobility during play and maximum protection from checks to the hands.

  • Field Gloves: Field gloves are worn by any player on the field except goalies. Attack, midfielders, and defenseman would all typically wear the same type of lacrosse glove but there are different features built into each glove to make it unique in terms of the performance that it provides the player.
    • ELITE level gloves: Elite level gloves offer the best performance in terms of protection and mobility on field. The materials in these gloves come with multiple layers of protection using hard materials to deflect impacts and softer foam stacks to help absorb the impact. The Elite gloves feature multiple pad breaks to anatomically fit to the hand and should give you the best range of motion versus lower priced gloves on the market. These gloves were designed for use at the highest level of the game but are recommended for players in middle school, high school, and college as well. Generally speaking the size range for elite level gloves would be Small (10”), Medium (12”), Large (13”) and XL (14”) but this size range may vary depending on the specific glove model.
    • INTERMEDIATE level gloves: Intermediate gloves provide developing players with a huge value as they provide increased protection but at a lower price point versus elite level gloves. These gloves are perfect for players that are looking for better protection as compared to their starter gloves. These gloves have increased protection and increased pad breaks for a better fit but use less premium materials as compared with elite level gloves allowing them to come in at a more affordable price. Generally speaking the size range for intermediate gloves would be Small (10”), Medium (12”), Large (13”) and XL (14”) but this size range may vary depending on the specific glove model.
    • YOUTH level gloves: Youth gloves were designed specifically for beginner / younger players just starting out in lacrosse. These gloves come in youth specific sizes to have a better fit on smaller hands and to keep the glove protection snug and in place for optimal coverage. The gloves are made with softer foams for a lightweight and a more flexible feel. This allows players to freely move their hands in the glove making it easier to scoop, throw, and catch the ball during play.

SHOULDER PADS (REQUIRED)

Shoulder pads are a mandatory piece of equipment for all field players – worn under a jersey or practice reversible jersey.

  • IMPORTANT RULE CHANGE: Beginning in 2022, ALL field players in the boys'/men's game must have shoulder pads or protectors that meet the NOCSAE performance standard. This rule applies to all players under NCAA (college), NFHS (high school) and US Lacrosse (youth) rules.
    • Adult NOCSAE compliant shoulder pad models: Zerolyte Shoulder Pad, Zerolyte Liner
    • Youth NOCSAE compliant shoulder pad models: Cadet Youth Shoulder Pad
  • Shoulder Pad Types:
    • Full Shoulder pad: Features shoulder caps, full chest and back protection, and bicep arm protection. These pads are often worn by offensive players that are looking for more protection.
    • Shoulder Liner: Feature full chest and back protection but have a more minimal design to the shoulder and arms for increased mobility. The liners are often worn by defensive players or players that want increased mobility on the field.
    • Youth Shoulder Pad: Made and sized specifically for younger players that are just starting out. The neck hole area is designed to stretch over the head so that the pad becomes secure and protects the shoulder and collar bone area of younger players when properly fit. These pads are made for any position youth player offense or defensive field players.

ARM PADS (REQUIRED)

Arm pads are a mandatory piece of equipment used to protect a players arms and elbow from stick checks, falls, and other contact with the arm.

  • Achieving a good fit on your arm pads is essential to both protecting you as a player as well as giving your arms increased mobility and freedom of motion when cradling, passing, catching and shooting.
  • Arm Protection Types:
    • Arm Guards: Generally speaking the longest form of arm protection, providing greater coverage. These pads have harder “elbow caps” that provide superior protection on the elbow bone and surrounding area. Great for offensive players who want maximum arm protection on-field.
    • Arm Pads: Slightly shorter than typical arm guards, but longer than defensive elbow pads. This mid-length design is perfect for midfielders or other players who want to balance targeted protection with increased mobility.
    • Elbow Pads: Generally the shortest of all of the arm pad types. Made for targeted protection only where most needed, while also providing the most arm flexibility and mobility. Great pad for elite defenseman.
    • Youth Arm Pads: Made specifically for younger, beginner players looking for a protective arm pad that allows the arms to move freely for quicker reaction time on passes and catching. Offers protection while learning how to play the game.

Note: For 8U and 6U girls lacrosse there are no pocket depth restrictions per US Lacrosse Rules.

HANDLE (SHAFT) TYPES

Most women’s handles come in a standard 32” handle length. The most popular diameter for the women’s game is the smaller 7/8” handle die shape that is made to fit more naturally in the hand for superior stick control on the field.

Note: For 8U and 6U levels handles are allowed to be cut shorter per US Lacrosse rules for those age levels. Consult the US Lacrosse website for the latest stick specifications for the women’s game.

  • Offensive players (attackman & midfielders): These players often look for a lighter weight handle that increases reaction time and overall stick speed on dodges and shots.
  • Offensive players (attackman & midfielders): All-Around players often look for a more balanced stick that will deliver lightweight performance but with increased durability for play on both sides of the field.
